More details
Fall weather changes fast: mornings can be chilly and afternoons warm. That is why kids are dressed in layers that are easy to add or remove.
At 40°F a toddler can wear long-sleeve top, pants, fleece, light jacket, winter hat, mittens, winter boots. For 50°F: long-sleeve top, pants, cardigan, light jacket, winter hat, sneakers. At 60°F a toddler can wear long-sleeve top, pants, cardigan, light jacket, thin hat, sneakers. For fall rain, add: raincoat, rain boots. If it is windy, bring: scarf.
If your child gets sweaty, change into dry clothes as soon as you are somewhere warm. Indoors and in the car, remove the outer layer so your child does not overheat. Dress for the feels-like temperature: wind and humidity make the air feel colder. A cotton base layer breathes well, while fleece keeps warm and stays light. Several thin layers work better than one thick piece: they are easier to take off indoors or in the car.
Watch how your child feels and change layers during the walk. This is a guide, not medical advice.
